How a raag works on the mind
Brain benefitsThe same raag can make you feel different things.
In a study from India, 122 listeners heard 12 raags, each as a slow alaap with no beat and as a faster, rhythmic gat. The same raag stirred different feelings in each form, shifting from calm to happy, or from sadness to tension.

History of Hindustani Vocal Music
Hindustani classical singing traces its roots to ancient Vedic chanting, developing over centuries under the patronage of Mughal-era courts into the raga-based system taught today. From the 18th and 19th centuries, distinct gharanas, schools built around a particular teaching lineage such as Gwalior or Kirana, each developed their own approach to ornamentation and phrasing.
Compositions to learn in Hindustani vocals
Sung by artists from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to Abida Parveen. A good place to start.
