What Carnatic singing does for your brain

Brain benefits

Years of Carnatic training show up in the brain.

Researchers in India compared adults aged 50 to 80 who had trained in Carnatic music for five years or more with adults who had not. The trained group scored better on visual and spatial skills, and brain scans showed more gray matter in areas linked to attention and planning.

History of Carnatic Vocal Music

Carnatic music is South India's classical vocal tradition, and its modern form was largely shaped in the late 18th and early 19th centuries by the 'Trinity of Carnatic Music': Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri, whose kritis (devotional compositions) are still the core repertoire students learn today.
