What singing does for your brain

Brain benefits

Voice training changes how your brain holds a note.

Researchers numbed the vocal folds of trained singers and of adults with no voice training, then scanned their brains as they sang. The two groups responded in opposite ways, a sign that training changes how a singer's brain balances what they feel against what they hear.

Singers' brains are wired a little differently.

Singers showed differences in the nerve pathway that links speaking with understanding language, compared with instrumentalists and with people who don't play music.

History of Western Vocal Training

Formal Western voice training traces back to the bel canto ('beautiful singing') tradition that developed in 17th-century Italian opera, built around breath control, tone and agility across a singer's full range. That technical foundation still underpins classical and musical-theatre training today.
