What playing drums does for your brain

Brain benefits

Drumming trains your hands and feet to work on their own.

Young people aged 16 to 19 who had never played took eight weeks of drum lessons. They got better at keeping their hands and feet on separate rhythms, and brain scans showed matching changes in the part of the brain that coordinates movement.

Drum lessons improved focus in a clinical trial.

Autistic teenagers and young adults aged 16 to 20 took eight weeks of one-on-one drum lessons. They showed better attention and fewer hyperactive and repetitive behaviors, along with stronger links in brain areas tied to self-control.

History of Drums

Drums are among the oldest instruments in human history, with skin-covered frame drums found across ancient Africa, Mesopotamia and China. The modern drum kit, though, is a young invention. It came together in early-1900s New Orleans, when the bass drum pedal let a single player control kick, snare and cymbals at once for the first time. That one mechanical shift is what made drumming a solo instrument rather than an ensemble of separate percussionists.
